YouTube users get “Music content cannot be played in PiP” error on iOS

Here is the gist of the article in video form:

New updates are added at the bottom of this story…….

The original story (published July 12, 2022) follows:

If you are an iOS user, you may not get all the benefits of Google apps readily available to Android users. And that’s the case with YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode.

YouTube has offered PiP mode to all Android users since its launch. However, its availability was limited on iOS and only Premium members could try it as an experimental feature, that too for a limited time.

After completely removing the feature from iOS a few months ago, YouTube has finally announced that it is gradually rolling out Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode to iOS for all users.

The feature is however limited to Premium members globally, while those in the US can use it even without a Premium subscription.

YouTube error “Music content cannot be played in PiP mode”

That said, those who try to use Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode on their iPhones or iPads receive the error message “Music content cannot be played in PiP” even when playing content not musical (1, 2, 3, 4).

I disabled pip in my general settings on my iPhone, can’t find pip settings in my YouTube settings and still get this annoying notification. How can I stop it? (Source)

@TeamYouTube There is a bug where I keep getting a message about PiP “Music content cannot be played in Picture In Picture (PiP)” Even though I don’t have YouTube Premium, it still pops up. And in my YouTube settings there is a Picture In Picture Enabler/Disabler. (Source)

This renders the feature completely unusable and affects all users, whether Premium or non-Premium.

However, someone managed to find a potential workaround that might help you temporarily get rid of this pop-up. You can check it below and see if it works for you.

Workaround: Another thing I found is that if you pause the YT video before exiting the home screen, it shouldn’t appear. (Source)

While users may be able to temporarily fix the “Music content cannot be played in PiP” error, a permanent fix is needed as it renders the feature completely worthless.

Unfortunately, YouTube support has not yet acknowledged this issue. However, we’ll keep an eye out for the latest developments and let you know as something noteworthy comes along.
