Snoh Aalegra at Youtube Theater

Clouds of smoke filled the stage at the Youtube Theater in Inglewood, California on June 4 as Swedish-Iranian singer Snoh Aalegra transported us through a sultry night filled with emotion. The show was in support of her third studio album Temporary highs in the purple sky, released last year via ARTium and Roc Nation. The album successfully earned a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

The evening began with the contemporary hip-hop influenced track “Situationship”. Dressed in a shimmering white ensemble and her hair slicked back into a waist-length ponytail, Aalegra let her stunning voice fly the night. She didn’t rely on complex choreography, flashy graphics or backing vocals, it felt like an intimate affair with only Aalegra and her band on stage. The smoke gave the show a touch of mystery, only his powerful voice and music were heard across the hall. Aalegra often looked through the smoke to connect with us dancing and singing on either side of the stage.

Snoh Aalegra’s combination of mellow melodies with vulnerable, relatable, and often cheeky songwriting is a real crowd pleaser. In case you didn’t know, the singer was mentored by late icon Prince, and her musical style hints at that influence — alongside a few others, including Mariah Carey and Lauryn Hill. Alegra delighted us with a perfect mix of all his hits, including “LOST YOU,” “We Don’t Have to Talk About It” and crooner “Fool for You,” plus two tracks that feature the frequent collaborator Tyler, the Creator, “Neon Peach” and “In the Moment”. Focusing primarily on music, Aalegra took breaks to thank the audience and reflected on her upbringing. Prior to performing “VIOLET SKIES,” she recounted her musical struggles, noting “I say this at every show, not to sound cliché or cheesy, but it’s important to me to say it. My musical journey hasn’t been easy at all. I’ve been making music for half my life and I just want to encourage anyone here who has a dream and a vision to really get into this shit. This next song is a letter to myself, thank you for not giving up on this trip.

Aalegra ended the night with a big festive encore, inviting a chorus of performers dressed in black on stage for the tracks “Find Someone Like You” and “I Want You Around”.
